In-State Tuition Rates
Carolina students utilizing VA education benefits will get an in-state tuition rate regardless of residency. The only exception to this is out-of-state students in online only programs. These students may still be able to qualify under the two options below or may be able to utilize the Yellow Ribbon program to offset out-of-state tuition costs.
If you don’t qualify for in-state tuition through utilizing VA education benefits, members of the Armed Forces on active duty for more than 30 days with a permanent duty station in North Carolina (and their spouses and dependents) are eligible to be charged the in-state tuition rate under the CHOICE Act.
Lastly, if you don’t qualify under the CHOICE Act, you may still qualify under recent North Carolina legislative changes, To do so, you must meet all of the following requirements:
1. Served active duty for not less than 90 days in the Armed Forces AND,
2. Received an Honorable Discharged from the Armed Forces AND,
3. Meet at least one of the following criteria:
a. Graduated from high school in North Carolina on or after January 1, 2004.
b. Served active duty in the Armed Forces with a permanent station in North Carolina for at least 90 continuous days.
c. Was awarded a Purple Heart.
